They are learned patterns, just like riding a bike or driving a car, that become automatic to you. You don't have to think about how to do them, you just do them from your subconscious mind. Is hypnosis effective for stopping smoking?

There’s growing academic evidence to back up the effectiveness of hypnotherapy for quitting smoking, hundreds of studies have been published. For me, the real evidence is in testimonials from dozens of clients who have stopped smoking permanently. I'm in contact with them years later and they never looked back.

I can't say that 100% of them stop. The ones that don't make it are usually those whose loved ones have 'told' them they must come to see me. They don't want to be there for themselves, they are doing it for someone else. If this is you, a session prior to your stop smoking session may be beneficial to evaluate the choices you are making and to give you the confidence to decide whether now is a good time to do this for yourself.

What happens during hypnotherapy?

There are two parts to a hypnotherapy session for smoking cessation, just one session is required and it takes about two hours. After all, there are two parts to your mind, the conscious mind and the subconscious mind, both of which need to work together to achieve what you wish to achieve.

In the first part, we will look at the reasons why you want to quit smoking. You have some very good ones - for example, those you love and who love you, your health and fitness to enjoy the things you love to do in your life. We will bring those messages to the forefront of your mind, so that they become more powerful than the cravings, which will increasingly fade as your certainty about your good choice strengthens over the coming days, weeks, months and years until the cravings you once had become an increasingly distant memory.

We will reframe the way you think about smoking. For example, imagining the benefits of quitting – like breathing more easily, having more energy and feeling proud of taking control. We'll also address the associations you have with smoking so that you can replace them with healthier, more positive choices.

The next part of the session is when you go into hypnosis. It is probably not what you think it is, as there are many myths and misconceptions about hypnosis. You are very much aware and in control. It is always your choice to go into hypnosis. We simply quieten that busy thinking mind a little (the so-called conscious mind), so that you are free to daydream, where we give subconscious suggestions to reinforce everything we have discussed and the positive change you wish to make.

For some people, they just can't believe how easy it was. They just get on with their life and never want a cigarette again. Just like that. I want this for every client with all of my heart, and I make every session totally personalised to each unique person to make it as easy as possible for them.
